Fabric color played an important part in Roman attire, indicating rank in society or homage for a specific holiday or occasion.

For example:

  • Blue fabric is used for philosophers
  • Black fabric is used for theologians
  • Green fabric for Doctors or medical professionals
  • White fabric was for soothsayers
  • Peasant togas are of a single drab color
  • Military officer's togas use two colors
  • Roman clan commander's togas used three colors
  • Imperial togas used as many as seven colors
