Greek and Roman Footwear

If you go to the trouble of finding the right toga costume or even making your own, don't ruin the effect with the wrong footwear! This means, no simple flip-flops.

You can wear simple leather sandals, but if you are going to do it right, check out your options for Greek cothurni (traditional Greek chiton/toga footwear), which came in a variety of styles throughout history:

  • Simple shoes made of a slip of leather strapped to the feet
  • Slipper like leather or cloth mules
  • Heavier leather boots
  • With Roman togas, ancient Romans wore the "caliga", a sandal with a heavy sole and separate leather top. These sandals are a great option for your toga costumes, or you can opt for a sexier style of shoe with the sole of the sandal strapped to your leg, crisscrossing around the ankle all the way up.
