North America is host of the largest number of St. Patrick's Day parade. The first parade was held not in Ireland but in New York City in 1762 when homesick Irish immigrants and Irish soldiers serving in the English army marched in lower Manhattan. Each year, 2-3 million people line the streets of Manhattan to watch approximately 300,000 people march up Fifth Avenue past St. Patrick's Cathedral. Other long-running North American parades include Montreal, which has marched since 1824 and Savannah, Georgia, which began in 1813 as well as many other cities and towns in the United States and Canada.
