During the Middle Ages when the plague was rampant throughout Venice and all of Italy, doctors would wear long-nosed masks filled with herb to protect themselves from the putrid air and hide the stench of death. They looked something like the Peste Di Veneza Mask, which features a long bird-like beak and attached black hat.
